Rare’s principle technical artist Valentine Kozin talked about creating clouds for Sea of Thieves adventure video game.
Early on the creators realized they had to do something special with the clouds. They wanted to make them very fluffy and painterly. The problem was that the studio is good at drawing polygons and solid shapes, but had trouble with fluffy things. The clouds in the game are actual 3D objects. This allowed shaping them in any way, for example as a pirate ship or a skull. According to the technical artist, no one has done clouds this way before. Kozin promised that gamers will see picturesque skies from wherever they are in the adventure game.
Sea of Thieves is multiplayer video game set in pirate times. Players will be able to hunt for riches, build their own crews and navigate the treacherous seas in a vast open world. The project will feature user-generated content. Gamers will be able to create their own custom stories with in-game tools.
Sea of Thieves is being developed on Unreal Engine 4. The project is set for a Q1 2017 release and will be available on PC and Xbox One.
