Bad Bot Report: Bots Accounted for Almost 50% of Internet Traffic in 2022

According to the annual Bad Bot Report, bots accounted for 47.4% of total internet traffic in 2022, indicating a 5.1% increase from the previous year.

Imperva has released its annual Bad Bot Report in which it revealed that nearly 50% of all internet traffic originated from bots in 2022.

According to the analysts, bots accounted for 47.4% of total internet traffic last year, representing a 5.1% increase compared to the previous year. The report also indicated that human traffic in 2022, which accounted for 52.6%, reached its lowest level in eight years.

Bad bot traffic, which refers to automated software applications capable of causing harm, abuse, and launching attacks, saw a continuous increase in volume for the fourth year in a row. In 2022, it reached 30.2%, a 2.5% surge from the previous year.

"Advanced" bad bots made up 51.2% of the total bad bot traffic last year, marking a significant increase in their proportion compared to the previous year's 25.9%.

There was also a staggering 155% surge in account takeover (ATO) attacks in 2022. Furthermore, approximately 15% of login attempts in the past 12 months across all industries were identified as ATO.

Bad bots exploiting business logic accounted for 17% of all attacks targeting APIs. Additionally, it was found that 35% of the account takeover attacks that occurred during the year were specifically aimed at APIs.

Among various industries, travel faced the highest volume of bot attacks, accounting for 24.7% of the total. Retail closely followed with 21% of bot attacks, while financial services experienced a significant but relatively lower volume of 12.7% of bot attacks.

When it comes to bad bot traffic on websites and applications, the gaming industry took the lead with a substantial proportion of 58.7%. Telecommunications also faced a considerable influx of bad bot traffic, comprising 47.7% of their online activities.

Out of the 13 countries examined in the report, seven of them surpassed the global average of 30.2% for bad bot traffic. Among them, Germany held the top position with 68.6% bad bot traffic, followed by Ireland with 45.1% and Singapore with 43.1%. The United States also had a bad bot traffic level higher than the average, reaching 32.1%.
