Cory Barlog: Studios Convinced Sony to Put Games on PC

The creative director of God of War explained how PlayStation developers contributed to PlayStation PC ports and said that he has "no idea" if the upcoming God of War Ragnarök is going to be released on PC soon.

The recent upswing of PlayStation games coming on PC was significantly caused by PlayStation studios asking Sony to make it happen, says God of War creative director Cory Barlog. In an interview with Game Informer, Barlog talked about the launch of the game on PC 4 years after its release on PS4.

Talking about how much impact the developers had on Sony's decision to release games on PC, Barlog says: "I think it was the collective of studios all over saying this is a really good idea. We should be looking into this. Eventually, I think it reached that tipping point. When we had sent so many suggestion box suggestions that they were like, 'I’m tired of hearing all this. Fine, we’ll do this.'"

For years, Sony believed that PlayStation had to be the only place where users can play PlayStation games, so buying the console was essential if players wanted to play the exclusives. However, the gaming industry is changing. For instance, Xbox does not only sell Xboxes but also makes its games available for PC. So, PlayStation's developers are eager to reach out to new customers, too: "It’s really exciting that there’s a new potential audience of people who haven’t played the game who get to experience it and show it off on their beefy machine," said Barlog.

Nevertheless, PlayStation devs haven't confirmed whether the upcoming games are going to be released on PC soon after their console release. Barlog said he has "no idea" if God of War Ragnarök port to PC will take less time than the first part of the game PC release. According to Barlog, PlayStation studios are working on "one game at a time": "We're ... kind of looking at each one and determining, 'Okay, is this the best thing?' And we’ll gauge how it does. Do people enjoy it? Did we do it right? Is there anything we did wrong? What can we do better in the future if we do this again? But at the end of the day, ultimately, it’s Sony’s decision."
