Epic Games To Offer Contract-Based Workers Full-Time Employment

Epic Games will be offering full-time employment with benefits to "hundreds" of temporary QA workers and other contract-based staff in the US.

Epic Games confirmed it will be offering full-time employment to "hundreds" of contract workers based in the US. As reported by The Verge, the Fortnite developer will extend the offer to the contracted staff which mostly includes QA testers along with some other "eligible" workers whose positions weren't specified.

According to the internal memo that was obtained by The Verge, Epic is not going to extend the full-time employment offer to all the contingent workers. “There are a few exceptions in which it makes sense for both the worker and Epic to maintain contingent worker status,” the document reads.

Epic spokesperson Elka Looks confirmed that the company will hire "a few hundred" of its contractors and said that all the staff will be directly employed by the company and will be eligible for Epic’s US employee benefits plans. She also noted that Epic Games will keep recruiting contingent workers for "short-term needs" as well.

Looks didn’t provide any additional information about the other positions of contingent workers apart from QA testers that Epic will be hiring and also didn’t mention which workers are excluded from the offer.

The news from Epic comes shortly after Activision subsidiary Raven Software laid off a dozen QA testers in December 2021 causing walkouts and later forming a union – the Game Workers Alliance. In contrast to these events, Epic’s move to hire its contract-based workers is a big step towards improving its employee welfare.
