Former Nintendo President Reggie Fils-Aimé Says He Isn't Against Unions But Doesn't Support Them Either

Reggie Fils-Aimé shared his thoughts on the tendency to unionization saying that unions are the answer to problems that ideally should not exist at all.

While the formation of unions within game studios is a rare occurrence yet, the topic of unionization in the gaming industry is coming up more and more often against the backdrop of various working culture issues in a number of game development companies.

Different game studio executives have different points of view on the matter and recently, former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé shared his thoughts on the tendency to unionization.

Speaking with CNET Highlights, Fils-Aimé said that he is not against such associations in the industry, but he does not support them either. He shared that, in his opinion, unions are the answer to problems that ideally should not exist at all.

Fils-Aimé explained that an employer should first think of what workers need to be satisfied with their jobs. According to him, there are three basic needs crucial for every employee: financial stability – understanding that a worker has a well-paid job, the opportunity to grow within the company, and recognition – some moral reward from management or the work itself.

"I believe that when one of those three needs isn't being met, then you have a problem and that is where we've seen union step in, and not only in the gaming industry but across all the other industries," Fils-Aimé said.

Speaking specifically about the video game industry, Fis-Aimé acknowledged that the market has a problem with working overtime and low wages. And this, according to him, leads not only to the creation of unions but also to other problems, such as a moral decline in a team and conflicts between employees.
