Customer service, support, and sales teams are in danger during a new round of Microsoft layoffs.
Microsoft confirmed it launched a new round of job cuts, a week after the start of its 2024 fiscal year. Previously, a downsizing was announced in January when the company announced 10,000 layoffs.
A Microsoft spokesperson didn't share a specific number of cuts in the latest round but a new filing with the Washington state Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) system revealed the company suffered 276 layoffs — 210 at the company’s Redmond, Wash., and Bellevue, Wash. divisions, plus 66 remote jobs.
Microsoft’s fiscal year 2023 ended June 30 and, usually, they do not announce such organizational changes at the beginning of the year but it appears they have decided to try a new strategy.
"Organizational and workforce adjustments are a necessary and regular part of managing our business," said the spokesperson. "We will continue to prioritize and invest in strategic growth areas for our future and in support of our customers and partners."
2023 will soon be named the year of layoffs as a number of companies decided to cut jobs. Lately, for example, Sega announced that Relic Entertainment has been hit by layoffs impacting 121 employees. The company attributed this decision to "external factors" that have been impacting the industry.
