Omniverse adds new animation tools, support of third-party renderers, new Unreal Engine 5 and Substance 3D Painter connectors, and much more.
NVIDIA released Omniverse Create 2022.1 – the first update of the year to the scene editor. It now supports third-party renderers, USD curves, new animation tools, and more. Omniverse also has new Unreal Engine 5 and Substance 3D Painter connectors.
One of the major improvements affected animation: the new Timeline and Curve Editor tools make animation creation and keyframing easier and more flexible.
The update improves Omniverse Sequencer, which allows you to sequence pre-created skeletal animations and make complete animated productions.
Additionally, Create now supports skeletal retargeting, allowing you to easily move animations from one biped to another. It also includes presets for popular character systems, such as Reallusion Character Creator 3.
The new node-based graph editor AnimGraph helps you blend and control skeletal animations as it supports instancing for scalability. To wrap it all up, you can use Action Graph – a runtime node-based visual editor that makes creating complex behaviors and interactivity possible.
Omniverse Create 2022.1 also adds GPU-accelerated PhysX 5.0 soft-body support that works with deformable objects.
The update also introduces Warp, which translates Python functions into native CUDA code to run on the GPU.
Rendering improvements were made to the new version as well. First of all, Create now supports Arbitrary Output Variables (AOVs) that allow you to break down a scene by the layers and use geometric/scene data.
Moreover, the new version supports the rendering and editing of curves in USD, which allows working with curve-based hair, wire, and more.
NVIDIA also added so-called Matte Objects – invisible objects that react to reflections and shadows and make renders more convincing.
Other features include the new Asset Store, where you can find and upload finished content, and Environment Browser (previously Sky Browser), which provides ground planes with shadow catchers.
Omniverse Create now also supports Geom Points in the RTX Renderer and USD Primvars.
You can also now use Hydra Delegate to switch the viewport from RTX Renderer to third-party renderers.
Speaking of third-party connections, at GTC 2022, NVIDIA announced a new Unreal Engine 5 connector, allowing live-linking Omniverse to the new version of the game engine.
Other connections announced include Substance 3D Material Extension and Painter Connector and Cinema 4D.
