Pollen: An Interview with Ville Kivistö

At GDC 2015 we had a chance to talk to Ville Kivistö about Mindfield Games and their upcoming game, Pollen. He gives us some insight into the use of Unity 5 and more.

Ville Kivistö from Mindfield Games talked about a really interesting VR-game Pollen. He gave some insight into the use of Unity 5 for virtual-reality projects.

Introduction

I’m Ville Kivistö, CEO, co-founder, and technical programmer. Mindfield Games was founded late 2013. We are a VR focused company and we’re working on Pollen, which is our first title which will be released later this year and we chose Unity 5 for the development of the game.

Pollen

It’s a first person exploration title, based on this space station on the moon called Titan. It’s sort of like a classic sci-fi story for a bit more of an adult audience. We are heavily inspired by Solaris and other movies. The player’s mission is to find out what is happening there.

Unity 5

Well, we chose Unity 5 (it’s also the only middleware we used to make Pollen) because we had previous experiences with Unity, so the engine was really familiar to us and we had connections with some Unity guys and so forth. The choice ended up being real easy for us.

Our favorite features of Unity 5 is the lighting system because in Pollen we don’t have any static light, everything is in real-time. It actually was in Unity 4 but when Unity 5 came we just got so much better lighting, that it’s definitely the feature for us with Unity 5. We also use some fluid simulations and so forth from the Unity store.

Release

Initially it will be a Windows game, but we want to release it on Steam and other marketplaces. It will be set for release on PC in late 2015 with optimization for Oculus Rift, but it is definitely not required to have a headset.
