The Mega Drive Mini 2 launched last week, on October 27, and it's the company's fifth miniature console, with the others including Astro City Mini V, Astro City Mini, the Mega Drive Mini (known as Genesis Mini in North America), and Game Gear Micro.
Following the release of the Game Gear Micro in October 2020, Sega's creative producer Yosuke Okunari said that the next miniature version of the Sega retro console could be a Dreamcast Mini or SG-1000 Mini. However, the next miniature system turned out to be the Astro City Mini V, followed by the Mega Drive Mini 2.
The Mega Drive Mini 2 was announced in June this year and, shortly after the announcement, Okunari said that he had considered producing mini versions of Dreamcast or Saturn, however, he noted that the cost of producing parts for either console would be quite high due to supply constraints caused by the COVID pandemic.
