Steam's Year in Review 2021: Results Superior to Even 2020's Growth

Valve has revealed Steam's annual Year in Review showing a large increase in the number of users and other outstanding results superior to even 2020's exceptional growth.

According to Steam stats, the platform saw 132 million monthly active users in 2021 while the year earlier, that number was 120 million. Besides, players spent nearly 38 billion hours on Steam last year which is 21% more than it was in 2020. Customer spending has also grown by 27% compared to the previous year. Steam also notes that every month of 2021 the platform got about 2.6 million new purchasers.

Valve also pointed out a significant growth in digital gift cards. Although Steam introduced them back in 2017, it was last year when the feature showed great results with 2.6 million digital gift cards sent. Besides, the dollar value of these gift cards increased by 43% compared to 2020.

The stats also show that over 2021 nearly 33 exabytes of content were delivered to customers. To get a better understanding of how much it is, Valve clarified that is "about how much data you’d use if the 330 million people in the United States all downloaded a 100GB game".

In 2021, formerly console-exclusive games from Sony and Microsoft were released on Steam which Valve considers the proof of the "open, competitive nature of the PC ecosystem".

Last year, Steam as usual held season game events and sales, and 2021’s Summer Sale showed the best revenue results in Steam's history. However, Winter Sale soon broke its record with 2.3 million users buying a game on Steam for the first time.
