Supercell Revenues Grew by 45% to €1.89bn in 2021

Finnish mobile game company reported that its revenues increased by 45% reaching €1.89 billion and its profits before taxes grew by 80% to €734 million. The company also shared that it's rethinking its "small teams" approach.

Finnish mobile game company Supercell best known for its Brawl Stars revealed its financial results for 2021. According to the report, the company's revenue reached €1.89 billion ($2.24 billion) showing a 45.3% year-on-year growth compared to €1.30 billion ($1.48 billion) the year earlier.

The company's EBITDA figure has also increased significantly – by 80% reaching €734 million ($852 million). In comparison, the previous year's profits before taxes were €407 million ($463 million). However, these results are still lower than those that Supercell had in 2015 when the company generated over $2 billion in revenue and €848 million ($965 million) in EBITDA.

In a blog post, Supercell's CEO Ilkka Paananen noted that since the launches of the studio's hit games Clash of Clans and Clash Royale, the titles have made over $10 billion in combined revenue. Apart from the mentioned games, such titles as Hay Day, Boom Beach, and Brawl Stars also significantly contributed to the company's business having over 5 billion downloads and 250 million players per month. Each of these five games has brought Supercell more than a billion dollars since they were launched.

Paananen also commented on the changes in the studio's working culture, noting that Supercell is rethinking its slow growth/small teams approach. "We realized we had made the mistake of applying the exact same thinking to both new game teams and live game teams," shared the CEO, "In extreme cases, we stuck to our mantra of 'small teams' because that was our culture, and had not realized that our culture should really be at the service of players."

Currently, the studio is moving to "slightly larger teams" of 20 to 35 people for its live games. "I am fully aware that “20-35 people” is still a relatively small team compared to the teams of several hundred people that exist in our industry. But for us, they feel big :-) ," Paananen added.
