Sales of boxed copies of Nintendo Switch games reached £88.7 million to date. The second highest-grossing games format was physical copies of PlayStation titles with £79.6 million.
New data reveals that physical copies of Nintendo Switch games are the highest-selling entertainment products in the UK to date.
According to the report from the Entertainment Retailers Association (ESA), the sales of Switch games since January 2022 so far amount to £88.7 million. While the figure represents a 12% decrease from last year, boxed games for Nintendo Switch still top the chart.
The second highest-grossing games format was physical copies of PlayStation titles – the combined sales of games for PS4 and PS5 reached £79.6 million, a 6.5% increase from the same period in the previous year. In 2021, PlayStation software sales were inferior to only Nintendo Switch, however, this year they were also surpassed by vinyl album sales which grew by 6.5% to £80.9 million.
Sales of Xbox titles – comprising both Xbox One and Series X|S boxed games – took the No.7 position in the chart. They amounted to £17.8 million, down 14.3% compared to this time last year. PC sales also saw a decrease – they dropped by 30.7% to £579,986.
CD albums, DVDs, and Blue-Ray were ahead of Xbox with their revenues reaching £68.9 million, £66.8million, and £52.1 million, respectively. Combined sales of boxed games, however, significantly outpace sales of music (£149.8 million) and film and TV (£118.9 million).
