US PlayStation Users Play More Games Than Japanese Users

New data shared by Sony reveals that PS4 and PS5 owners in the US play more games than Japanese owners, but spend fewer hours on games on average.

During CEDEC 2022, a conference for computer entertainment, Sony unveiled a series of statistics gathered from a user survey that compares US PlayStation owners to those in Europe, Asia, and Japan.

According to the data Sony revealed, over the past year, owners of PS4 and PS5 in the US played an average of 10.7 games – the highest figure across all regions, while the lowest figure was in Japan where gamers played an average of 5.9 games last year. EU owners were very close to the US's figure – they played an average of 9.6 games a year, and in Asian countries, this figure reached an average of 8.2 games.

While Japanese owners of PS4 and PS5 play fewer games a year, they spend significantly more time playing games than owners in any other region. Namely, last year, they spent 66.2 hours playing games. The second spot here was taken by American owners who spent 28.7 hours on games, followed by European players with 27.2 hours and Asian players with 25.5 hours.

The stats also reveal that the Japanese are the ones who get more trophies in games – their average trophy percentage is 17%, while Americans are not that interested in this with their average trophy percentage being just 1%. In Europe, this figure is 7%, and in Asia, it is 5%.

However, interestingly, players in Asia and Europe have the highest number of Platinum Trophies (13% and 12% respectively). 4% of Japanese players won Platinum Trophies in a year, and the Americans are in last place here as well (1%).

The data also reveals that Japanese users tend to purchase disc-only versions of full games, while Americans are more likely to buy digital versions.
