The GeoTech team talked about burnout, provided an overview of its educational system, highlighted the importance of continuous learning and professional development, and explained what it looks for in new specialists.
Introduction
Hello, I'm Denys, the CEO of GeoTech. I've been with the company since its inception in 2018. My academic background is in economics, but I've carved a career in tech.
Work Organization at GeoTech
GeoTech was built on a remote working philosophy from its inception. We are a global team with a presence across the USA, Canada, Europe, Africa, and Asia. Our ambition is not just to be part of the gaming and media industry but to redefine remote work within it. We champion transparency, autonomy, and trust.
We have streamlined our management to best fit our hybrid work setup, reducing bureaucracy and fostering a culture of trust. Communication is facilitated through tools like Discord, Slack, and Zoom, with the latter always being camera-optional. Additionally, global team meet-ups allow us to foster connections beyond the digital realm.
We operate with three primary teams:
- GeoTech Engine Team – Specializing in the Unreal Engine.
- GeoTech Studio
- Geo Games
Transparency is core to our ethos; all team members have access to every company project. Additionally, we hold company-wide meetings to disseminate updates.
Hiring a New Specialist
- Curiosity: We seek individuals passionate about their work.
- Self-Motivation: Our remote setting demands a high degree of self-discipline and motivation.
- Communication & Collaboration: Given our global footprint, seamless communication is crucial.
- Respect & Tolerance: Every team member brings unique value, and mutual respect ensures harmony.
Welcoming Newcomers
At GeoTech, we prioritize the integration of newcomers. Typically, the initial three months are dedicated to acquainting them with our culture, sometimes involving team travels. We facilitate comprehensive introductions to the company and its specific team. During this period, regular HR check-ins help us capture and address their feedback.
Before a newcomer joins, we identify potential team connections to ease their transition. We share project presentations and engage in one-on-one discussions to facilitate this integration.
Addressing Burnouts
Burnout is a real concern. To proactively address this, we have established regular one-on-one check-ins and company surveys. If demanding projects arise, we're ready to provide additional support – be it through additional personnel, post-project downtime, or new hires.
Creative Freedom
Freedom is intrinsic to GeoTech. Our flexible work hours and decentralized setup are testaments to this. While we expect dedication, we equally encourage diverse input from every department. Every idea is treated with respect. If not implemented, feedback is provided. Some of our significant strategic moves, like starting a game studio, stemmed from these very ideas.
