On August 17, 2023, Larian Studios released an updated version of the fourth hotfix for Baldur's Gate 3 explaining that a rare problem with the compiler had occurred, causing Baldur's Gate 3 to crash for some players.
The developers also shared they changed their patch release process to avoid a similar situation in the future. In particular, Larian will conduct thorough testing even for the smallest changes added to the pre-release version at the last moment. This will help prevent such unforeseen results.
Larian confirmed that saves made in Baldur's Gate 3 with the installed fourth hotfix are now working again. The team thanked their fans for their patience and apologized for the inconvenience but noted that they had to roll back the patch because otherwise, Baldur's Gate 3 would have continued to crash.
"Hotfix 4 went through a rigorous QA pipeline and was confirmed as a candidate for release yesterday. However, we triggered a rebuild of the version relatively last minute to change the version number. The version that was cooked was unfortunately plagued by compiler corruption, which was causing certain exceptions that normally wouldn’t cause crashes to - you guessed it – cause crashes," wrote Larian.
"Since compiler issues like that are extremely rare, we weren’t prepared for it. We should’ve been. We messed up."
