They have been a part of the company for over 8 years.

Nowadays, companies laying off their employees is a frequent sight, and BioWare, the creator of Mass Effect and Dragon Age, couldn't avoid breaking some hearts.

The studio is eliminating about 50 roles in an attempt to "match the studio’s changing needs" and among them are Dragon Age writer and technical director.

"In order to meet the needs of our upcoming projects, continue to hold ourselves to the highest standard of quality, and ensure BioWare can continue to thrive in an industry that’s rapidly evolving, we must shift towards a more agile and more focused studio. It will allow our developers to iterate quickly, unlock more creativity, and form a clear vision of what we’re building before development ramps up," commented BioWare.

Mary Kirby has worked on all three Dragon Age games along with Star Wars: The Old Republic for 17 years, she has created Varric and written storylines for characters like Sten, Merril, Loghain, and more. She is now looking for writer/narrative designer opportunities.

Jon Renish has been the studio's technical director since 2020 and worked as a lead systems programmer and then foundation area supervisor at BioWare starting in 2015. He posted a thread on Twitter recalling his journey.

What do the layoffs mean for BioWare? Well, the studio reassured its fans that the next Dragon Age and Mass Effect games will be fine, and it is busy making sure Dreadwolf is "worthy of the Dragon Age name," which can be hard considering half of the original team has left the company. On the other hand, former BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah is helping as a consultant, so we might get a great game eventually.

When will it happen? No one knows, and BioWare is in no hurry to share any details, although Jeff Grubb once claimed Dreadwolf is targeting summer 2024.
