Bungie Is Reportedly Reviving Marathon as As a PvP Extraction Shooter

Industry insider Tom Henderson states that Bungie is working on the next game in the series, claiming that it will be a three-person extraction-based shooter with a strong emphasis on PvE.

Bungie is reportedly planning to revive its sci-fi first-person shooter video game series Marathon.

According to well-known industry insider Tom Henderson, who cites sources familiar with the matter, a new game in the series will be an extraction-based shooter in the vein of Escape from Tarkov where players can join squads with up to three people.

As Henderson claims, the new game is set to be the "ultimate example of a living game" with seasonal rewards and progression being the key part of it, which might imply that Bungie will follow the Destiny model.

Henderson also reminded that in 2019, in an interview with IGN, Bungie CEO Pete Parsons shared that the studio intended to release at least one non-Destiny game by 2025.

He also recalled that in 2018, Bungie filed for the "Matter" trademark under “video game software” and "electronic games services provided by means of the internet or other communication network" apparently suggesting that the next Marathon game might be this project.

Following this report, Henderson also took to Twitter to say that he has "A LOT more details" on the game that he will share soon adding that the title "seems to be more of a PvPvE" with a "strong emphasis on PvE being a 'major component'."

Henderson claims that the game is currently in the pre-alpha stage and could be announced at any time in the near future.

The first Marathon game was released in 1994, followed by the 1995 and 1996's sequels. The game series takes place in future environments, typically inhabited by hostile alien life forms. The original game initiated a number of features in the gaming industry like the ability to reload weapons, weapons displayed in the multiplayer, a heavy emphasis on storytelling, and more.
