Creating a Dissolve Effect in UE4

Gergő Juhász recreated one of the effects generated in Blender by 千葉章人.

We know you loved effects by artist 千葉章人 (@chiba_akihito on Twitter) we shared last week. One of the talented artists from ArtStation decided to recreate the dissolve effects using Unreal Engine adding a nice burning touch.

The UE4-version was created by Gergő Juhász who was kind enough to share some details on the workflow. "The particles rely on sampling the GBuffer, hence the limitation that off screen dissolving objects won't emit particles, wrote the artist.

As for the original effect, 千葉章人 adjusted the amount of Emission, Alpha, and Displacement depending on the distance of the objects.

Here are the final Unreal results:

The artist also advised watching this 2019 GDC talk with programmer Rupert Renard who discussed how Sony Santa Monica Studio created God of War’s particle emission technique to remove corpses from the screen.
