Developers at Dambuster Studios shared that the game will ditch the traditional skill tree system in favor of the skill deck.
Dambuster Studios developers who are currently working on the upcoming Dead Island 2 recently shared details about a new, "exciting" feature in the game called the "skill deck."
In an interview with Game Informer (transcribed by NME), the game's creative director James Worrall and lead narrative designer Ayesha Khan said that the title will be ditching the familiar and traditional skill tree system and will use the skill deck instead, which, according to the creators, will be "one of, if not the most exciting addition to the game."
Worrall explained that the skill deck is a set of slots representing various abilities that can be swapped in and out as desired, allowing players to experiment with different loadouts. "You can take some real risks with your loadout. It sometimes pays off, it sometimes goes horribly wrong," the creative director added.
Apparently, skills can be altered during gameplay, with the option to switch them out even mid-air, providing players the ability to adapt to different situations in the game.
This will be quite a big difference compared to the original Dead Island, which used a skill tree divided into three branches. A similar system was used in both parts of Dying Light, another zombie game from the creators of the original Dead Island, Techland.
Dead Island 2 is set to release on April 28 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
