The creator of the original Dead Space, Glen Schofield, shared that he took the announcement of the remake "as a compliment", although he admitted he has "weird feelings" about not being involved in the development.
Glen Schofield, the creator and executive producer of the original Dead Space, has recently shared his feelings about the EA Motive Studio's remake of the space horror.
Speaking to Game Informer, the game developer revealed that he is happy that EA gave the franchise "a second life" and considers the creation of a remake "a compliment". However, Schofield also admitted that he feels frustrated about the fact that he is not taking part in the development of an updated version of his horror.
"I took [the annoucnement] as a compliment. I still do take it as a compliment. I'm still kind of bummed about it too," Schofield said. "There's this weird, weird thing, like you're not attached to your own game. It's a weird feeling. [...] They want to make a game better than the one you made."
During his work at Visceral Games, Schofield was the creator and executive producer of the original 2008's game and also contributed to the Dead Space sequel before leaving the studio and co-founding Sledgehammer Games in 2009. He, however, didn't take part in developing the third part of the game which was released in 2013.
Previously, Schofield said that he was looking forward to seeing his space horror remake. He commented on the announcement of the remake saying "Directing the original Dead Space was one of the highlights of my career. Excited to see what the EA Motive Studio team does with it!"
The first Dead Space was released in 2008 on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. Subsequently, two full-fledged games and several spin-offs were released as part of the franchise, including games for mobile platforms.
The Dead Space Remake will be a complete rethinking of the original game – the developers from EA Motive are going to supplement the story and gameplay, taking into account the developments of the rest of the series. The remake is slated for release on January 27, 2023, and will be launched on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Scofield himself is now engaged in the development of a "spiritual successor" of Dead Space called The Callisto Protocol.
