Decal Manager for 3DS Max

Here's a little useful tool for your 3D projects.

Check out Decal Manager for 3DS Max, a useful tool that will help you add small details to your models. The plugin lets users quickly load and save decal sets, save geometry combinations that you can then place, attach decal objects to screen for ease of access, and more.

Other details:

  • Snap to surface decal place mode, remembers scale per decal, auto parents to target geometry
  • Does not currently work in orthographic view mode
  • Tested in 3DS Max 2018, 2021, and 2022

A few issues I thought I'd warn others about:

    -  decals don't seem to wrap to the contour of curved surfaces https://streamable.com/v5pbx5
    - can't use snap with decals so placement isn't precise
    - No feature for long repeating elements like trims
    - UI feels a bit clunky. Randomly moves or flips decal sheet. https://streamable.com/h9rjey

It's a cheap alternative to DecalMachine for Max users. Promising plug-in that I hope will be iterated in the future so I don't have to load up Blender just for DecalMachine.

This useful tool was made by Sean Davies, since the author of this article seems reluctant to write his name anywhere.
