Diablo IV Devs Talk the Game's Open World

Diablo IV devs explained that the game's world is a branching story where players can choose in what order they wish to play the game, although they noted that the open world in Diablo IV is not as free as, for example, in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

In a new interview with IGN, Diablo IV's Game Director Joe Shely and Diablo General Manager Rod Fergusson spoke about the game's open world, various locations, the visual design of maps, and more.

According to the developers, the team, first of all, wanted to create a convenient map of the whole world, so that players could navigate and at the same time understand that they are exploring the environment on their own instead of strictly following the list of quests.

All story acts in Diablo IV can be completed in any order – for example, players can start from act three, then proceed to act one, and then go to act two. According to the devs, due to this, each walk-through will be slightly different.

At the same time, however, according to Ferguson, the open world in Diablo IV is not as free as, for example, in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The game has a beginning, a middle, and an end, but the player can choose how to go through the story and what decisions to make during the adventure.

Fergusson also noted that in Diablo IV, players can ignore the plot for a while and go and complete various side quests, however, they will still be pushed to complete the campaign – the devs explained that they decided to do this so that players do not get lost in the open world.
