Diablo IV's Necromancer Will Be Able to Customize His Army of the Dead

The developer revealed the Necromancer's unique mechanics, the Book of the Dead, that allows players to customize their army and choose specializations.

At the recent Xbox and Bethesda showcase, the team presented a new gameplay demo of Diablo IV and revealed the return of the Necromancer as the fifth class of the game. As the final launch class has been unveiled to the public the team decided to share some more details about the class.

In a blog post devoted to the Necromancer, Blizzard revealed its unique mechanics which focus on the "idea of choice and what kind of Necromancer you want to be." Right after character creation, a player will have the Book of the Dead – the feature that allows them to choose the type of resources they want to use: Corpses and Essence.

Essence is the players' primary resource which gives players the ability to restore their lives, while Corpses are the leftover remains of enemies who die near the Necromancer which can be used to summon skeletal minions.

Additionally, playing as a Necromancer will allow you to choose one of four high-level playstyles: Bone, Darkness, Blood, or the Army. Each playstyle has a unique set of skills aimed at seeking out the enemies or damaging them in various interesting ways.

The Book of the Dead also gives players the ability to customize their army and choose specializations. There are three customizable summons available: Skeletal Warriors, Skeletal Mages, and the Golem, and each summon has one of three specializations that players can choose from.

Each unit in the army has its own upgrade options, so players can choose their own style of play and adjust the army of the dead to suit them. Players can also sacrifice a unit in exchange for some kind of permanent bonus. Blizzard notes that they have worked on the balance so that each customization method remains optimal.

The devs also spoke about the weapons the Necromancer can use including Swords, Daggers, Wands, Focuses, Shields, Scythes, and, of course, Curses.

Diablo IV is set to release in 2023 on PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, and PS4. The exact date has not yet been named.
