Dragon's Dogma 2's Performance Issues Caused by NPCs Thinking Too Much

Don't overthink.

Capcom

It's been more than half a year since Capcom released RPG Dragon's Dogma 2, the sequel to the 2012 game, in March this year. But it didn't enjoy a great start, with weak performance on PC and microtransactions contributing to Steam's then mostly negative rating. The developer did promise to look into solutions to the mostly-complained frame rate issues back then.

An update was finally dropped last Friday, which allows players to decide between "prioritize graphics" and "prioritize playing performance." With this option, players can enjoy the game with frame rates between 50~60 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X if they give the performance a higher priority.

In an interview with Famitsu, and translated by Automaton, the developers talked about the culprit of the performance issue:

"In Dragon's Dogma 2, CPU power is allocated to process the thoughts of each NPC as well as the effect on character physics. Therefore, in scenes where many NPCs appear at once, like in towns, the CPU load would get extremely high, which in some cases affected the frame rate. Since CPU was our bottleneck, GPU-related solutions like lowering the resolution had little effect on improving frame rate"

Since then, the team has been "reworking how NPCs' thoughts are processed and making small tweaks, including changing the order in which processes are executed."

The game's review has slowly climbed to "mixed" right now, and the new update will hopefully help it continue to improve. Last month, Dragon's Dogma series director Hideaki Itsuno announced his departure from Capcom after working there for more than three decades.
