EA Shuts Down the Project CARS Series

EA revealed that it's decided to "stop further development and investment" of the Project CARS series as it wants to focus on other racing titles in its portfolio.

EA has revealed that it has shut down the Project CARS series, the IP the publisher acquired when it purchased Codemasters, the owner of the franchise's developer Slightly Mad Studios, in 2021.

In a statement to GamesIndustry.biz, the publisher said that it evaluated the "longer-term growth potential" of Project CARS and apparently determined that the series would unlikely become a successful game which is why it has decided to stop all development and investment in the racing game series and focus on other titles in its portfolio.

"Decisions like these are very hard, but allow us to prioritise our focus in areas where we believe we have the strongest opportunity to create experiences that fans will love," the publisher said.

EA also added that its future racing portfolio is currently focused on delivering "socially-led" games with long-term live-service experiences, something which Project CARS isn't.

The original Project CARS game was released in 2015 and was followed by its successors, 2017's Project CARS and 2020's Project CARS 3. The three titles were published by Bandai Namco as the games were released before EA acquired Codemasters.

In its statement, EA said that the staff affected by the series' closure would be moved into "suitable" roles within the company "wherever [they] can." It's unclear how many employees will be affected, but at the time Slightly Mad was acquired by Codemasters in 2019, the studio employed about 150 people.
