Epic Games has shared its results and achievements for 2021 reporting another success of its services and games powered by Unreal Engine. In a recent blog post, the company tells about several notable milestones including more than 500 million Epic Games accounts, 6 million downloads of The Matrix Awakens demo, and over a million MetaHumans.
Epic shared that the number of Epic Games accounts reached 500 million which is a huge outcome for the company. However, it didn't specify the number of accounts by segment, so it's unknown how many of these people only play Epic’s own games and how many of them only used Epic’s store.
In addition, Epic Games reported that last year's The Matrix Awakens technology demonstration: an Unreal Engine 5 Experience for PS5 and Xbox Series X and S was downloaded six million times. It also said that more than 2.7 billion friend connections have been established in Fortnite, Rocket League.
Epic Games Store profiles and the number of Unreal Engine downloads in 2021 increased by 40% compared to 2020. At the same time, 48% of the announced next-gen titles are developed on the Epic Games engine. The company also shared that over a million realistic models of people have been created in the MetaHuman Creator.
Epic Games also talked about the directions of development in 2022. The company intends to actively use its cloud technologies for real-time graphics processing, use the same assets in different media, and develop the metaverse. As for the latter one, the company sees it as an "interconnected hub of applications, platforms, and marketplaces will provide everything creators need to build the virtual worlds of the future".
