Ex-Ziva Artist Showcases Complex Character & Creature Rigs Made With Ziva VFX

Mateusz Matejczyk has shared a cool CFX & ML deformation reel, offering a closer look at some of Ziva Dynamics' projects.

Mateusz Matejczyk, a talented Character Rigger who, until recently, held the position of Creature Supervisor at Ziva Dynamics and now continues to work with Ziva's software as part of the DNEG team, has shared an awesome CFX & ML deformation reel, showcasing some of the projects Ziva Dynamics worked on over the past couple of years as part of Unity.

With this breakdown, Mateusz offered a closer look at Samir, a character asset built by the team using Maya and Ziva VFX, and machine-trained in Ziva RT Trainer for Unity's SIGGRAPH 2023 presentation to demonstrate lifelike real-time muscle deformation in Unity. According to the artist, Ziva VFX body deformation was compared against photogrammetry data in 22 different poses, which were simulated from the rest pose to the scan pose to match the reference as closely as possible.

"Scapula movements were ML trained with the photogrammetry poses used as training data," commented the author. "Some of the bones were simulated, instead of driving them with the skin clusters. Those bones were: cervical and lumbar vertebrae, all ribs, sternum, patella, and carpal bones. Ziva VFX setup was a coupled simulation solving, all of the muscles, bones, and fat tissues in one pass. This approach increases deformation quality and stability because of the bi-directional influence of those tissues."

Additionally, the reel showcased the Sam and Fragile rigs that the team developed for Kojima Productions' upcoming Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, as well as the Giant rig they created for the gameplay trailer of Senua's Saga: Hellblade II. Mateusz noted that all the rigs and assets were built using a workflow similar to that used for the Samir project.
