Facebook Horizon Revealed

Facebook revealed Facebook Horizon, their new social VR world coming to Oculus Quest and the Rift Platform in 2020. The team describes as “the first step into an ever-expanding world of connection and exploration where anything becomes possible.”

The experience starts with a bustling town square where people will meet and chat, which is a small part of “an interconnected world where people can explore new places, play games, build communities, and even create their own new experiences.”

First, you need to design your own avatars from an array of style and body options, and then use telepods, some kind of portals, to get to new worlds.

The worlds here are built using the World Builder, a set of easy-to-use creator tools. “Everyone will have the power to build new worlds and activities, from tropical hangout spots to interactive action arenas, all from scratch—no previous coding experience needed,” states the team. “Whether people choose to build, play, or simply hang out, Horizon will ensure a welcoming environment through new safety tools and human guides — Horizon Locals — to answer questions and provide assistance, if needed.

Before launching Facebook Horizon in 2020, the team will be closing down Facebook Spaces and Oculus Rooms on October 25. The Horizon beta will open early next year. You can learn more here.
