First Look at Gameplay of New Horror from Dear Esther Developer

Still Wakes the Deep tells a chilling story in true Chinese Room fashion.

The Chinese Room definitely has a reputation because of its narrative exploration games, including Dear Esther, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, and Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture. It sets a tone and environment to make you think about more than just the game, and I'm pretty sure its next title, Still Wakes the Deep, will evoke similar feelings.

At least that's what I gathered from the game's first gameplay trailer, which shows the protagonist, an off-shore oil rig worker, walking around the structure trying to get away from angry waves and a mysterious entity lurking in the shadows.

"1975 Scotland, raging North Sea, steel-clad corridors of an oil rig, and there's something else out there with you..."

Find your crew and help them survive, traverse through the flooding corridors and falling apart decks, face a horrifying foe, and pray to get out of it alive. No weapons or powers will help you, so get your mind ready for the horror adventure of your life. The Chinese Room wants to show you "a symphony of action, trepidation, tender emotions, and awe."

The closest the developers have come to a narrative horror was Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, and many fans didn't appreciate this turn to story-focused gameplay. But I think this new experience will turn out better and more unique, and I'm looking forward to it.
