If you've been on the Internet for the past few days, chances are you've already heard everything there is to hear about the now-infamous Willy Wonka-themed event that took place in Glasgow, Scotland the past weekend. But for those who haven't, here's a quick recap.
Dubbed Willy's Chocolate Experience, the event took place on February 24-25, advertised with AI-generated images as an unforgettable Roald Dahl-inspired adventure featuring Oompa Loompas, a chocolate fountain, and other sweet delights.
However, instead of the magical world of candy and sugar attendees were promised, they were greeted with a nigh-empty warehouse, poorly-made props, tired actors armed with scripts written by ChatGPT, a couple of jelly beans, and half a cup of off-brand soda. All of that, combined with a ticket price of £35 (around $44), made Willy's Chocolate Experience the worst-organized event since the 2017 Fyre Festival.
Despite the event's objective failure, its meme potential is undeniable, as thousands of online creators have already channeled their creativity into making hilarious memes dedicated to it. One such creator was Animal Crossing enthusiast Haztecamarera, who combined the disastrous experience with the world of video games and recreated it in Nintendo's 2020 Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Using the pictures shared by the disappointed attendees online as the main reference, the author has thoroughly reimagined the event's venue and characters, utilizing in-game props and appropriately designed characters to accomplish this feat.
Thanks to Animal Crossing: New Horizons' flexible character creator and the ability to upload any image into the game, Haztecamarera even managed to integrate the AI-generated image from the event into their virtual recreation and set up 'The Unknown', a legitimately creepy character made up by the event's organizers.
Additionally, the creator supplemented each screenshot and video they posted with commentary, offering a comprehensive recap of the entire event.
