Guide on Using Photo Mode for Last of Us Part II In-Game Shots

Naughty Dog team shared a handful of tips on how to create beautiful in-game shots using Photo Mode and how to edit the existing shots to make them stand out more.

The Last of Us Part II is full of captivating scenes, intense character’s facial expressions, and a general atmosphere. If you’re looking for ways to enhance your current in-game capturing workflow or want to try it out, check out the tips from the Naughty Dog team on how to make the best shot possible. After all, who can explain it better than the creators themselves?

Art director John Sweeney focused on cinematic shots and post-editing and gave the following tricks:

  • Keep Depth of Field and Motion Blur together at around 10% to get nice base results.
  • Keep the Noir filter at 10-20% to add a nice filmic contrast to the image.
  • Fine-tuning with Saturation and Explosion afterward can be good, too.
  • Use the thirds grid to compose cinematic looking shots.
  • Don’t miss out on the Slow Motion options.

Animator Keith Paciello who was responsible for an amazing Emotional Facial System dived into the portrait mode capturing process instead:

  • When capturing portraits, use Portrait: Under Filters to adjust the colors as well as DOF and Vignette.
  • Take multiple shots from different camera angles to pick the one you like the most.
  • To get the most stunning cinematic shot, find a strong pose and a nice camera angle, play with DOF to bring in the right tones to achieve.

On a side note, Keith has discussed the production process of the character's animation and the teams' approach to creating a full new realistic system, check out the article to find out more details.
