Ever since its premiere back in January, HBO's TV adaptation of Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Part I has been breaking record after record, attracting more and more viewers with each new episode. The series' penultimate episode continued the trend, achieving the 8.1 million viewers milestone across HBO Max and linear telecasts.
Even that respectable number, however, was beaten last Sunday by the ninth episode of the show, the season finale, which closely recreated the ending of the game itself, and even featured Laura Bailey, the voice actor behind Part II's Abby, playing one of the doctors. Despite airing at the same time as this year's Academy Awards, episode 9 managed to draw 8.2 million viewers, breaking yet another viewership record for HBO. For comparison, only 4.7 million tuned in to watch the first episode of the series.
