Housemarque's Next Title Won't Be a Returnal Sequel

The studio's reportedly working on a new title that is set to be a new IP.

Housemarque, the developer behind Returnal, has confirmed it is working on a new title that is not the sequel of the company's last year's successful release. In an interview with GamesBeat at the recent DICE Summit, Housemarque managing director Ilari Kuittinen shared some details on the new project.

According to Kuittinen, the game is in early development with the team is currently "concepting it out". He also mentioned that the title the studio's working on will be the new IP meaning that it most likely won't be the DLC or sequel of Returnal. Game director Harry Krueger elaborated on Kuittinen's statement, saying: "At this stage, we're quite proud of what we accomplished with Returnal, and we're quite excited to pursue that same trajectory as a company."

Speaking of Sony's interest in creating more live service games and Housemarque's attitude to them, Kuittinen noted that although the studio is "one of the very last dinosaurs making arcade games", it is considering the possibility of developing such games. However, he mentioned that their previous experience of creating multiplayer games (that seemed to be a necessary thing to do for game developers a few years ago) wasn't a success.

Krueger added that with the game industry growing and developing, various games can "peacefully coexist". "There can be live service games, multiplayer games, games with many different sensibilities", said the game director.
