Intel Reportedly Could Have Acquired AI Chip Giant NVIDIA In 2005

People familiar with the situation call it "a fateful moment," as Intel could have helmed the production of AI chips.

Back in 2005, Intel reportedly could have changed the market of AI chip production by acquiring NVIDIA, one of the leading companies in the sphere.

Intel's CEO at the time, Paul Otellini, offered the company's board a striking idea: to purchase NVIDIA, a company known for chips used for computer graphics, for $20 billion. However, according to "two people familiar with the boardroom discussion," the idea wasn't met well, and the board refused to realize it. The reason reportedly was that Intel didn't have a promising experience of absorbing other companies, and the NVIDIA acquisition deal would have been the most expensive acquisition. One of the people who attended the meeting said that it was "a fateful moment."

NVIDIA is now considered the most successful and advanced company in producing AI chips, while Intel doesn't benefit from the AI boom. NVIDIA's stock market value is now more than $3 trillion, several times larger than the price of the possible acquisition more than two decades ago. At the same time, Intel's stock market value has fallen $100 billion, and the company itself could have been acquired by another tech giant, Qualcomm.

The AI chip company is rapidly developing its AI technology and introducing more and more advanced tools. For instance, at CES 2024, NVIDIA unveiled a lot of advanced tech pieces: the GeForce RTX 40 SUPER Series GPUs, new services for ACE, and a generative AI tool by Getty Images, along with other AI tools, new laptops, and a broadcasting beta are also waiting for your attention. Also, last year, the company announced an AI foundry service for startups and enterprises, which allows for building and deploying custom AI models, including intelligent search, summarization, and content generation, on Microsoft's cloud platform.
