And 47 million pirated games.
Nintendo
Players' hunger for nostalgia pushes people to commit crimes. Italian police have seized 12,000 retro consoles and over 47 million pirated video games worth more than €47.5 million ($52.5 million).
The consoles, which did not meet EU technical or safety standards, were imitations of old Nintendo, SEGA, and Atari consoles, as reported by BBC, with popular games from the 1980s and 90s on them, including Super Mario Bros., Street Fighter, and Star Wars.
The fakes were made in China, Alessandro Langella, head of the economic crime unit for Turin's financial police, told the AFP news agency, to be sold in stores or online.
The games have been destroyed and the people responsible arrested and charged with trading in counterfeited goods. If they are found guilty, they will spend up to 8 years in prison.
I think this shows that there is definitely a market for retro games and consoles, so companies should support game preservation initiatives instead of going against them.
