Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan has confirmed that the company is planning more acquisitions beyond those that have already been announced in 2021 and 2022. PlayStation head shared the plans during the official PlayStation podcast on April 1.

"We’re in a really good place with PlayStation Studios right now and have been for the past few years. The critical success and the commercial success of the games that they’ve been making … has given us permission to invest heavily in content creation," said Ryan.

Ryan recalled that in 2021, Sony acquired five studios including Returnal creator Housemarque, PC port specialist Nixxes Software, Demon’s Souls PS5 remake developer Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite. In early 2022 the company told about the acquisition of Bungie for $3.6 billion, and the most recent Sony's buyout became Jade Raymond's Haven Studios which was only announced last month.

The Persistence Enhanced

According to the executive, this trend will continue as it is a "virtuous cycle where success begets success".

Ryan went on to stress once again that Sony is not going to add their games to the updated PS Plus subscription immediately at release, noting that in the long run this could disrupt their release chain and affect the quality of the games.

"Now, I have to say, putting these games into a subscription service immediately upon their release would break this virtuous circle, and we wouldn’t be able to invest in the way that we’re currently able to," said Ryan. So we’re not doing it. We’re going to stick to the approach that we have and has served us well under many years now."
