Microsoft announced that support for Windows 10 would end in October 2025. The company encourages consumers to transition to Windows 11, stating that the new operational system features new features and tools.
After October 14, 2025, Windows 10 will not receive free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes. The PC on Windows 10 will still operate, but Microsoft notes that it will be at greater risk for viruses and malware when Windows 10 reaches the end of support.
Customers will be able to purchase Extended Security Updates (ESU) for one year at the price of $30. Microsoft explains: "ESU is a paid program that will entitle enrolled PCs to receive Critical and Important security updates after support for Windows 10 ends. The program will provide Critical and Important security updates but will not provide other types of updates or technical support." Enrollment for purchasing ESU for Windows 10 will open in 2025.
After support for Windows 10 discontinues, Microsoft apps such as Office 2016 and Office 2019 will also reach the end of support. The company recommends using one of the Microsoft 365 subscription options or installing the non-subscription-supported version currently available, Office 2021.
