Road Warrior is one of the longest-going mods out there.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was released for PlayStation 2 in 2004, 18 years ago, and on the same day, an ambitious mod surfaced: Road Warrior is meant to turn GTA into Mad Max 2. "Modeling and mapping is 90% of it, so getting it all done now will make it so much easier when [the game] comes out," said the creator Aaron Deneau, also known as T-808 on GTA Forums, back then. It's 2022 now, but Road Warrior is still in development.
GamesRadar+ shared the story of Deneau's mod and the struggles they both had to deal with. While many contributors have left the project during these years, the original author is determined to complete it: "I can't think of any other way I'd love to spend my life and devotion to."
Deneau made the first models in 3D Studio Max and has created many more since then. It hasn't been easy: Deneau even called his mod "cursed". He, like several others working on GTA Road Warrior, encountered serious hardships in real life along the way, and the work on the mod was stopped at some point, but now the creator is back on track and posts his models on ArtStation.
"We still get people asking for more, especially on our Facebook page. I just love the world of Mad Max, and I've loved Grand Theft Auto since GTA 3. We've released loads of stuff over the years, but the dream would be to get a full team interested again, who can help with textures and rigging, creating maps and designing character models. I'd love to collaborate with someone on a destroyed Sydney Opera House, a decimated Sydney Harbor, and, of course, a Citadel or Namibia map."
