The device reduces the voice volume by -20 decibels.
If you'd like to enjoy your VR experience but don't want to bother everyone around, Mutalk is for you. The developer Shiftall describes it as a Bluetooth microphone with a mute function that prevents your voice from leaking out.
The device works on a Helmholtz resonance principle, it creates an air pressure pocket in the inner cavity, which keeps sound frequencies from escaping through the air hole.
Mutalk reduces speech volume by -20 decibels and even by -30 decibels for louder noises. Shiftall claims people sitting right next to you can't hear what you're saying wearing the device. The cushion that you’ll be spitting into is washable.
The developers promise over 10 hours of battery life. Mutalk is compatible with Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android.
While it can be used with a VR headset, its area of use is much wider: it's pretty handy for conference calls or any other talks. You can hold it or strap it to your face if your hands are busy.
Mutalk also reduces background noise, here is an example:
If you're not afraid of people looking at you wearing something on your mouth, you can purchase the device later this year for ¥19,900 (around US$139.)
