New 3DMark Ray Tracing Benchmark for PC & Android Phones

It "measures games-related graphics performance by rendering a demanding, ray-traced scene in real time."

UL Solutions released Solar Bay – a new 3DMark benchmark that will test ray-traced graphics performance on Windows PCs and high-end Android devices. It measures "games-related graphics performance by rendering a demanding, ray-traced scene in real time."

Ray tracing is "a method of graphics rendering that simulates the physical behavior of light." In other words, it makes the lighting in games look deeper and more realistic, so you might want to check how your hardware fares in this regard.

Solar Bay is built using the Vulkan 1.1 API and offers two tests: a quick benchmark for immediate performance and a stress test measuring how performance changes over periods of heavy load. The first gives you an overall framerate score and three sub-scores for each ray tracing section, while the second runs the Solar Bay workload for 20 minutes and shows you how performance varies.

PC Gamer tested Solar Bay on a system with RTX 4090, i9 13900K, and 2x16GB of DDR5-5600. It scored 194,320 returning over 700 FPS. "For comparison, the best AMD result appears to be 156,489 with a Radeon RX 7900 XTX. That's not a bad showing for an AMD card, though cards like this and the RTX 4090 are surely CPU-limited."

Solar Bay is available for free for 3DMark users. 3DMark for Windows costs $34.99, and the Andriod version is on Google Play for free.
