After the success of the Quake remaster, the studio expressed its desire in making a remaster of another shooter.
Nightdive Studios is the developer known for creating remastered versions and re-releases of classic games including System Shock: Enhanced Edition, Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition, and SiN: Reloaded. Last year, the studio released a remaster of the original Quake, adding 4K and widescreen support, improved models, dynamic lighting, and new levels to the classic shooter. And now Nightdive expressed a desire to make a remaster of another shooter – 1998’s Unreal.
The fact that Nightdive Studios is ready to make a remaster of the original Unreal was told by the head of the studio Stephen Kick. He took to Twitter to say that, after the Quake remaster, former Epic Games employee Cliff Bleszinski who worked on the Unreal and Gears of War series got in touch with Epic's founder and CEO Tim Sweeney to discuss the project. Kick added that anyone also wants to see an updated version of the game, can "leave a message" to Sweeney.
Bleszinski later responded to explain that he was "not saying anything for legal reasons." Tim Sweeney hasn't commented on the matter yet.
Apparently, there are no agreements regarding Unreal yet, and it is not known whether Epic is even interested in remastering their old titles.
Unreal was released in 1998 exclusively on PC. It was the first release on Epic Games' proprietary engine, which was later named after the game itself, Unreal Engine.
