The GitHub team recently removed 8,535 repositories containing forks of Yuzu, an emulator for Nintendo Switch games. This action was taken in response to a single, extensive DMCA complaint from Nintendo. Before the purge, GitHub moderators contacted the owners of the original repositories to allow them to make necessary adjustments and offered access to legal resources if needed.
In February, Nintendo filed a lawsuit against Yuzu's developers, accusing them of facilitating piracy. However, instead of pursuing a legal battle, the emulator creators opted for a settlement with Nintendo. As part of the agreement, they agreed to cease the project and pay $2.4 million in compensation to the Japanese company.
Following the news of Nintendo's lawsuit, GitHub users began creating forks of Yuzu to preserve the emulator. However, these were eventually discovered and removed.
