However, the AI lab is working on enhancing the capabilities of GPT-4.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has stated that GPT-5, which will presumably be the follow-up to the company's recently launched AI language model, GPT-4, which was released in March, is not currently being trained, effectively dispelling any rumors about the development of the vext version of the language model.
As reported by The Verge, at an event held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Lex Fridman, an AI researcher at MIT, asked Altman about his thoughts on a recent open letter that has been circulating in the tech industry. The letter urges research labs, such as OpenAI, to halt the development of AI systems that surpass the capabilities of GPT-4.
The founder of OpenAI responded by sharing his criticisms of the open letter. Altman pointed out that it was "missing most technical nuance about where we need the pause." He aslo added that an earlier version of the letter falsely claimed that OpenAI is currently training GPT-5 and stated that the letter's claim was unfounded and "sort of silly."
"An earlier version of the letter claimed OpenAI is training GPT-5 right now. We are not, and won’t for some time," Altman said. “So in that sense, [the letter] was sort of silly."
Despite his criticisms of the open letter, Altman, however, did acknowledge that there were certain aspects of it that he agreed with. Specifically, he expressed his support for the letter's emphasis on ensuring that AI models are safe and aligned with human values.
After announcing that there is currently no training underway for GPT-5, Altman went on to clarify that upgrades and updates are being developed for GPT-4.
"We are doing other things on top of GPT-4 that I think have all sorts of safety issues that are important to address and were totally left out of the letter," he said.
