Corey Corza has released a great add-on for Blender that lets you pin vertices using Proportional Edit so you don't adjust something you don't want to touch.
This is how it works: when you pin vertices, you can modify the part you've pinned only, without accidentally grabbing the mesh around it. To make it work, press Shift+P in the Edit mode.
