Phone buttons return – but now on screens.
Smartphones nowadays are smooth and simple in shape. But if you've missed the bumps of buttons from 20 years ago, this project might be interesting for you. Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University’s Future Interfaces Group (FIG) presented Flat Panel Haptics – a shape-changing OLED display with buttons you can feel.
The creators used embedded electroosmotic pumps (EEOPs) controlled and powered directly by applied voltage; they are 1.5mm in thickness and allow stack-ups under 5mm. They raise the surface of the screen so that you can not only see but also touch pop-up buttons. In the video above, you can see it "making" a keyboard, numbers, and other shapes.
With this technology, you can feel when you get a notification, start and pause music without looking at the screen, and even have the touchscreen pulsate when it wants your attention.
The idea looks awesome already, and there are many uses for the tech. Where do you see it going?
