Sky and Journey Creator Thatgamecompany Recieves a $160m Investment

The funding will go towards support for Sky: Children of Light's player base, game development, and expansion of the studio's staff.

Santa Monica-based indie game studio thatgamecompany announced it has received a $160 million investment. The funding was led by investor group TPG and venture capital firm Sequoia.

According to thatgamecompany, it will use the funding to support Sky: Children of Light's player base as well as further game development. The money will also go towards expanding the company's 100-person staff to more than 150 people.

Thatgamecompany was founded in 2006 and developed such titles as flOw, Flower, and Journey. Its mobile game Sky has shown impressive results having over 160 million downloads and nearly seven million active players daily.

Co-founder and CEO of thatgamecompany Jenova Chen shared: "Our mission is to elevate games as a legitimate form of art. We want to see a game that emotionally appeals to people of all ages, identities, and backgrounds within a single experience."

Arun Agarwal, managing director at TPG, commented: "Jenova and his team have a track record of developing innovative games that not only entertain players but allow them to build inclusive communities where they feel supported and valued. ... We’re proud to have the opportunity to partner with a visionary leader like Jenova to support thatgamecompany’s next stage of growth." 

Along with the funding announcement, the company also announced that Pixar co-founder Ed Catmull will be joining the team as a principal adviser on creative culture and strategic growth.
