The total includes physical and digital sales across PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and PC.
Sonic the Hedgehog’s latest adventure, "semi-open-world" action Sonic Frontiers, has sold over 2.5 million copies since its launch in November.
The 2.5 million figure was revealed by a tweet from Sega – it includes combined global physical and digital sales across PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and PC.
In a follow-up tweet, the Japanese publisher added that it will continue supporting Sonic Frontiers with "large-scale" updates. All the updates will be free and will feature a number of new additional elements, including new modes and costumes, to the action game.
"SEGA will continue to strive to provide impressive experiences to customers around the world through the global development of excellent entertainment content," the company added in a press release.
Despite the commercial success, Sonic Frontiers was met with mixed reviews, with some people praising the game and some complaining about its visual issues and problems with optimization. The game's director, Morio Kishimoto, addressed the criticism saying that he considers Frontiers' launch a "global playtest" and all the feedback is taken into account.
