Star Wars Jedi's director shared that the team had to persistently convince Lucasfilm of their vision and even fight for the right to use lightsabers in the game.
Since its release in 2019, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has garnered a significant following among gamers and Star Wars fans alike. With its engaging story and challenging gameplay, the game has proven to be a massive success for its developer, Respawn Entertainment, and publisher, Electronic Arts.
However, when Respawn just started working on Fallen Order, it had not yet established a proven track record for developing games on the scale of a major franchise like Star Wars. With the stakes high and expectations even higher, the team had to prove that it was able to deliver a game that would satisfy both gamers and Star Wars fans alike.
In an interview with Dexerto, Fallen Order's director Stig Asmussen shared some details about the game's initial stages of development, including Respawn Entertainment's relationship with Lucasfilm.
According to Asmussen, the team had to continually persuade Lucasfilm of their vision. They even had to fight for the right to use lightsabers in the game, as Lucasfilm was hesitant to entrust such a significant aspect of the franchise to just anyone.
However, the development process for the sequel became much smoother following the success of the first game, Asmussen says. Currently, Respawn views its relationship with Lucasfilm as a cohesive and unified team, instead of perceiving them as a separate entity that must be convinced of every decision.
"I don’t look at Lucasfilm as 'them,'" he says. "We’re working on this together. We’ve been doing it for six or seven years now, it’s been a long time. We’re not just partners, we’re part of the same team as far as I’m concerned."
Those who had the opportunity to play Star Wars Jedi: Survivor noted that the sequel not only advances the game's story but also contributes to the overall Star Wars narrative. This is evidence of the strengthened partnership and trust between Lucasfilm and Respawn, reflecting the success of their collaboration.
In the same interview, when asked about the possibility of a third game in the Cal Kestis story, Asmussen was hesitant to give a definitive answer. However, the game director did hint that a third installment may become a reality one day, as he thinks in trilogies, which aligns with the storytelling style of Star Wars. So, it is quite possible that a follow-up to Survivor may be on the horizon.
