In February, Krafton, the publisher behind the upcoming Subnautica 2, outlined in its financial report that the game would adopt a "game-as-a-service model", featuring up to four-player co-op and a strong focus on "enhanced replayability".
Later, Unknown Worlds, the developer of this underwater survival sequel, shared an update clarifying all the confusion and live-service aspects of the future game.
According to the developer, by a service model, the team simply means that they want to release updates over an extended period of time, similar to what they did with the first two games in the series. They clarified that the game won't have season or battle passes, nor require a paid subscription.
Also, Subnautica 2 won't primarily revolve around multiplayer gameplay; rather, "co-op will be an entirely optional way to play the game", so you can fully enjoy the game in single-player mode.
Adding to that, the team informed that there would be no early access for the game this year.
"Early Access is not intended for release in 2024, but we plan to share a lot more information later this year," shared the developer.
