With the new investment, the company intends to expand its team and support the development of its multiplayer network technology.
Swedish-based network engine coherence announced it has raised $8 million in funding for further developments of its low-latency multiplayer network technology for game developers. The round was led by Griffin Gaming Partners, with participation from several other unnamed investors.
According to a statement, the investment will go towards growing coherence's team and making its technology that offers opportunities to democratize the development of real-time multiplayer experiences available to game developers.
Founded in 2018 by former Playdead CEO Dino Patti, coherence is an open scalable platform for creating multiplayer games and virtual worlds aimed to make online game development more accessible. It will initially launch with a Unity software development kit (SDK) and plug-in and is said to add support for other platforms afterward.
"Real-time multiplayer experiences still have significant untapped potential. There are so many hurdles when it comes to making multiplayer games that can effectively shut down the creative process early on in a game's development, said Patti. "With Coherence, we want to break those barriers, and this latest round of funding is going to help us fulfill that mission. It's been a very exciting journey until now, and I can't wait for more talent to join our already amazing team."
